Transmission : check the oil level

The following method is taken from the WM manual TURBOHYDRAMATIC 400 TORQUE CONVERTER TRANSMISSION - section T2 - Servicing. A good oil level is important becasue, as the same source points out : an overfilled transmission will result in foaming*; a low level may result in loss of drive when cold engine; insufficient fluid damages the transmission.
*Foam is a collection of small bubbles of air that accumulate on or near the surface of the fluid. [..] Foam is an efficient thermal insulator, so the temperature of the oil can become difficult to control. The presence of air bubbles in the fluid can lead to excessive oxidation, cavitation, the reduction of lubricating properties of the oil and hydraulic system failure. 0-Locate the transmission filler hole

It is located on the right part of the engine bay. Blue filler cap.

1-Marks on the transmission dipstick

0.45 litres fit between the MAX and MIN levels.

2-Run the car for a 20 miles drive in order to raise the transmission oil temperature

It is important to check the level with a hot (76°C - 170° F) oil because under this temperature the liquide remains under the MIN mark.

3-Position car on a level ground and apply handbrake, slow idle

Note that slow idle is important.

4-Set gearchange to all positions and back to P

5-Engine running, P, add oil little by little and check level

Use Dexron 3 automatic transmission oil
