Bonnet removal for example when
performing a radiator change / check
can be time to check the condition of the cushions that lay under the
bonnet for sound and heat insulation purpose.
The originals cushions are black coarse cotton duck on one side and
finer weave duck on the other, with a layer of fiberglass batting
between them. This is sewn on to the wire frame around the edges, which
you can reuse.
This kind of material is still very common.
Check here for the clips Removed bonnet face down.
Removing the insulation cushion fasteners. They tend to miss or loosen
and it causes the material to touch the AC compressor belt, resulting
in a tear.
The cotton material covering the fiberglass on he insulation cushion
facing the bonnet is almost completly torn apart after 40 years.
This is the underside of the refurbished insulation cushion.
